Connecting Goodfit to Claude
Connect Claude Desktop or Claude Code to your Goodfit account, then ask about jobs, candidates and assessment results in plain English.
Once connected, Claude can look up your Goodfit data and answer questions about it. It can also make changes for you, like moving a candidate to the next stage, and it asks before it does.
What you can ask
- "Which candidates applied to Backend Engineer this week?"
- "Summarise Asha Rao's assessment results and any integrity flags."
- "Which candidates have been sitting in Screening the longest?"
- "Compare the top 3 candidates for Product Designer by score."
- "How many candidates did we invite last month, and how many finished?"
- "Move Rahul Mehta to the Interview stage."
Before you start
| You'll need | Why |
|---|---|
| A Goodfit owner login | Only the owner can create a key. Admins can see the API Keys page but can't create keys. |
| Claude Desktop (Mac or Windows) or Claude Code | The Claude apps that can connect to Goodfit today |
| Node.js 18 or newer | Claude Desktop only. A free download you install once. |
Step 1: Create a key for Claude
- In Goodfit, open Developers → API Keys in the sidebar.
- Click Generate Key and name it after the person who will use it, e.g.
Priya's Claude. - A window shows the key. Under Connect to Claude, the setup is ready to copy with your key already filled in. Copy it before you close the window: the key is shown only once.
Lost the key? Create a new one and revoke the old one.
Step 2: Connect Claude Desktop
Install Node.js (skip this if it's already installed)
- Go to nodejs.org and download the LTS version.
- Open the downloaded file and click through the installer, keeping the default options.
Add Goodfit to Claude
- In the Goodfit window from Step 1, pick the Claude Desktop tab and click the copy icon.
- Open Claude Desktop. Go to Settings → Developer and click Edit Config. A folder opens with a file called
claude_desktop_config.json. - Open that file in a text editor: TextEdit on Mac, Notepad on Windows.
- If the file is empty or only contains
{}, select everything, paste, and save. If it already has other text in it, follow Claude already has other tools set up instead. - Quit Claude completely, then open it again. Closing the window isn't enough. On Mac, use Claude → Quit Claude. On Windows, right-click the Claude icon in the taskbar tray and choose Quit.
Check it works
Start a new chat and ask: "What jobs do we have open on Goodfit?" Claude asks for permission to use Goodfit, then answers.
Claude already has other tools set up
Don't replace what's in the file. Find the "mcpServers" section and add the goodfit part inside it, with a comma after the entry before it. The result looks like this, with your key in place of <your-api-key>:
{
"mcpServers": {
"some-other-tool": {
"command": "..."
},
"goodfit": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"-y",
"mcp-remote",
"https://apidocs.goodfit.so/api/v1/mcp",
"--header",
"x-api-key:<your-api-key>"
]
}
}
}If the file has other settings but no "mcpServers" section, add the whole "mcpServers" part from Goodfit after the last setting, with a comma before it.
Connect Claude Code (for developers)
- On the API Keys page, pick the Claude Code tab and copy the command.
- Run it in your terminal.
- Open Claude Code and type
/mcp. Goodfit should be listed as connected.
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user goodfit https://apidocs.goodfit.so/api/v1/mcp --header "x-api-key: <your-api-key>"--scope user makes Goodfit available in every project on your computer, not only the folder you ran the command in.
What Claude can change
Three habits keep this safe:
- One key per person. Name each key after the person using it. When someone leaves, revoke their key and nobody else is affected.
- Read before you allow. Claude asks before using a Goodfit tool. Check what it's about to do, especially rejections, invites and deletions, and avoid always allowing tools that change data.
- Lost laptop? Revoke the key. Open Developers → API Keys and click Revoke. The key stops working straight away.
Troubleshooting
- Goodfit doesn't show up in Claude Desktop: quit Claude fully and reopen it (see Step 2). If it still doesn't appear, Node.js is probably missing: install the LTS version from nodejs.org (safe to repeat if you're not sure), then quit and reopen Claude again.
- Claude Desktop shows an error about the config file: the file has a typo, usually a missing comma or bracket. Copy the setup again from the API Keys page and paste it over your edits. Paste the key rather than typing it: TextEdit can swap straight quotes for curly ones, which breaks the file.
- Claude says the key is invalid: the key was revoked or copied incompletely. Create a new key and paste the fresh setup.
- Claude says it's being rate limited: it made too many requests in a short time. Wait a minute and ask again.
- Goodfit works in one Claude Code project but not another: the command was run without
--scope user. Runclaude mcp remove goodfit, then run the command from the API Keys page again.
